My name is Mr. Keady and this will be my 5th year at Fuller Middle School teaching Science. I am really looking forward to having a great year with you guys. Please read the information below because it will give you a better understanding of the topics we will cover this year and also my expectations.
CURRICULUM
The 6th grade Science Curriculum focuses on Earth Science including Astronomy, Geology and Earth History, and an introduction to Metric Measurement. We will do many hands-on laboratory activities utilizing the scientific method, science skills, and problem solving. The Fuller Science laboratory, school grounds, my classroom and the Fuller neighborhood serve as sites for our scientific investigations. We will often use cooperative learning to encourage teamwork. In addition, you will be guided to use many study skills and strategies to help you learn.
TEXTBOOKS
We use three textbooks throughout the school year: Inside Earth (IE-TB), Earth’s Changing Surface (ECS-TB), and Astronomy (A-TB). Keep them at home all year to do your homework.
SUPPLIES
Keeping it simple this year: (NO BINDERS)
1. Notebook
2. Folder
3. Pens / Pencils
4. Highlighters
HOMEWORK
Homework will come in the form of a weekly packet and will be due on Friday. It will be given to the students on Thursday and will include notes, articles and some vocabulary. Due the following Thursday.
AFTER-SCHOOL SUPPORT
I will be available for after-school support on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. You are invited to come at any time to get extra help, do your homework or participate in a review.
QUIZZES
There are two main types of quizzes – announced quizzes and unannounced quizzes (pop quizzes). Announced quizzes are usually longer and more in depth; you will receive a Study Guide to help you prepare, and there will be an announced after-school review date. Unannounced quizzes are shorter and may occur any time such as at the beginning of class (based on homework), after a video, or after a lesson; these are to check to see if you are doing your work and paying attention.
TESTS
Each semester will have two tests - take home and in class. These will be much more in depth, but in school and after school review sessions will be very helpful.
SCIENCE PROJECTS AND ORAL PRESENTATIONS
We will do several small projects, both in class and at home, and one more extensive research project which you will present to the class. You will be given many opportunities to speak about science concepts in class. The more that you talk about something, the better you learn it.
EXTRA CREDIT
You can earn 5 extra credit points each semester, which will be added to that semesters grade. The assignments are called “Science in the News” and the student must bring in a current events article and then present the information to the class. Each article and presentation will be worth 1 point onto your final grade.
GRADES
10% Homework
30% Summative Assessment (tests / projects)
60% Formative Assessment (quizzes / classwork)
